A few commonly asked questions

Q: Does the syringe flush have to be repeated with prolonged use?

A: IO access may be compromised if the line is not used for prolonged periods. Often, IO lines can be opened by an additional syringe flush. In a clinical volunteer study, an infusion rate of 30ml/hour per infusion pump has been sufficient to maintain IO line patency for a period of 48 hours.1

Q: Is there more or less pain as the IO is left in longer?

A: Pain associated with IO infusion is subjective and varies among patients. Site selection, repeat saline flushes, and flow rates can affect pain. The proximal humerus site should be strongly considered for higher flow rates and ease of pain control as fluids tend to flow easier through the humerus, requiring less pressure to deliver the initial flush.2-4

Q: Is the Arrow® EZ-Stabilizer® Dressing indicated to be left in place for 48 hours?

A: Yes, the EZ-Stabilizer® Dressing was evaluated and qualified for a 48-hour placement on the skin as part of the EZ-IO® Intraosseous Vascular Access System.
